Understand nutrition before implementing it

To understand on how to use nutrition in a way that it helps you is important to derive the maximum benefit. As a half baked knowledge is always dangerous. But, the good side of nutrition is that at least it is not as dangerous than taking your own medicine without consulting a doctor.

Since its never been on top of our mind but as our mother’s used to teach us on how we should eat everything and not just one. We should get familiar with the concept of nutrition and the terminologies associated with it. Like we hear the world sustenance in the corporate world to succeed similarly nutrition helps us sustain a healthy body. Though our food habits are primarily led from the way we have been brought up at home and what has been an important part of our mother’s style of cooking and the ingredients. In today’s scenario where fast food have taken over, mother’s have becoming working mother’s the importance on nutrition has taken its toll. At times we have seen habits changing due to environment I come from a pure vegetarian family and I started eating non veg through neighbourhood friends. Hence habits can change due to external reasons for both the bad side or the good one.

We have seen many people jumping the bandwagon following others copying their nutrition chart without even looking at the fact that each and every person is different and has different nutritional requirements. So it becomes imperative for us to be self aware and understand our requirements in a proper manner. So while people may come back with various suggestion my request is to put thought behind action and not follow blindly.

So every person is what he thinks / what he or she eats / how he exercises to keep himself fit.

Almost 99% of the mass of the human body is made up of six elements: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus. Only about 0.85% is composed of another five elements: potassium, sulfur, sodium, chlorine, and magnesium. All are necessary to life. It is built by the nutrition we take through food, carbohydrate, protein, water, fats, vitamins and minerals.

Human body composition

The composition of the human body can be looked at from the point of view of either mass composition, or atomic composition. To illustrate both views:

  • The adult male human body is approximately
    • 57% water, and
    • water is 11% hydrogen by mass but 67% by count of atoms.
    • Thus, most of the mass of the human body is oxygen, but most of the atoms in the human body are hydrogen atoms. Both mass-composition and atomic composition figures are given below (see pie graphs and table).


Body composition may also be analyzed in terms of molecular type (e.g., water, protein,connective tissue, fats (or lipids) apatite (in bones), carbohydrates (such as glycogen andglucose) and DNA. In terms of tissue type, the body may be analyzed into water, fat, muscle, bone, etc. In terms of cell type, the body contains hundreds of different types of cells, but notably, the largest number of cells contained in a human body (though not the largest mass of cells) are not human cells, but consist of bacteria (bacterial cells) residing in the normal human gastrointestinal tract.

Food energy is the chemical energy that we derive from our food and molecular oxygen through the process of cellular respiration.

Calorie definition.

The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a kilogram of water by one degree Celsius. A calorie (with a lower-case c) is a measurement of the heat needed to raise the temperature of a gram of water, rather than a kilogram.



If you burn wood, you liberate energy stored in the ordered cellulose molecules which have been produced by the tree in a “disorder to order” process. In the burning, you add oxygen and get carbon dioxide and water as combustion products along with the liberated heat. The liberated heat comes from the energy stored in the ordered sugar molecules which make up the cellulose.


The process by which animals use energy is a very similar process. They too need oxygen to burn the starch in a way to produce CO2 and water with the liberation of heat. When you are burning fat or burning sugars, you are producing about the same things as if you were burning a wood fire. You do produce heat, which we warm-blooded animals use to maintain our body temperature. But we also give off a lot of heat as well. On a 24-hour average basis as a result of human energy, we may give off about the same amount of heat as a 100 watt light bulb. For living things, only about half the energy of the metabolic process is immediately released as heat – the rest is trapped in a high energy molecule which is vitally important to all the processes of life – the molecule adenosine triphosphate.

Obtaining energy from food molecule like glucose or carbohydrates involves breaking them down into smaller molecules: this general process is called catabolism. By contrast, the building up of complex molecules from simpler ones is called anabolism.
