Anger or Krodh in Hindi a reflection

So lets start with what has Geeta to say about Anger or Krodh

“krodhad bhavati sammohah sammohat smrti-vibhramah
smrti-bhramsad buddhi-naso buddhi-nasat pranasyati”

The literal meaning of which is

From anger comes delusion; from delusion the loss of memory; the loss of memory causes destruction of discrimination; and from the destruction of discrimination he perishes.

Its a beautiful depiction of what happens to a person who gets angry what is the path and following steps to finally leading to his own destruction.


Why do we get angry?

While there would be multiple thesis written on it and various reasons. My view its a normal emotional reaction to multiple situations which are not to our liking and more of an impulse reaction leads to our own destruction. From losing friends, to close relations to social relationship and outcomes like increased stress, negativity, unnecessary passions flying, etc.

Something like Aamir Khan’s controversial statement which led to anger and different people vented it out through different means, through protest, making negative statements, Jokes aimed personally and many other ways. On the other side some of the more matured Leaders totally ignored his statement and in fact went beyond to say the media took advantage of the whole scenario for their own gains and possibly many more would have done the same.

So why is that people react differently to different situations. How were those leader able to demonstrate more maturity. Is there a success mantra which they know and we are not. When I was looking for those answers a name came in my mind a person world renowned for his non violence Mahatma Gandhi. Is there something which he has mentioned on Anger. The first quote i could search was

“Anger and intolerance are the enemies of correct understanding”

Which to an extent is a subset of the verse in the Geeta but still it did not answer my doubts. It forced me to search more to possibly find an answers. Then I found another one which said:

“It is not that I do not get angry. I don’t give vent to my anger. I cultivate the quality of patience as angerlessness, and generally speaking, I succeed. But I only control my anger when it comes. How I find it possible to control it would be a useless question, for it is a habit that everyone must cultivate and must succeed in forming by constant practice.”

Which I felt captures the essence of the above. Anger is a natural phenomena and a human being is prone to anger. But, how we respond to anger is the key to success. If we could inculcate the above in our daily lives we would be to respond better to anger making us a better person and create a harmony in and around us and the society would turn out to be a better place to live.
